Last night we watched what was part of the final series of the medical drama ER on the incongruously-named television channel GO! - 15 months after it aired in the USA.
I mention this, not because of the much hyped "return" of George Clooney, but of the organ transplantation story that was central to this episode.
The producers of this episode are, in my view, to be congratulated on dealing with this sensitively and purposefully. Although there were minor inaccuracies, for once (in this genre of television drama) these did not swamp the storyline and could live comfortably with the plot.
In particular, the scene where Dr Doug shows the Susan Sarandon character the difference between the MRI of a normal person's brain and a brain-dead brain was far more powerful than what I've heard about this topic over the years.
So good on ER, and what a shame that GO! chose not to advertise this aspect of this episode.
