[ The following is added as a result of the barnstorming popularity of the Steve Abbott program Under The Grandstand, broadcast on Saturday & Sunday nights on SBS in July-September 2005 during the luncheon interval of the England-Australia Test cricket matches. ]
John is a qualified cricket umpire. He has been a Full Member of the New South Wales Cricket Umpires and Scorers Association since 1990.
His on-field career spanned the years 1984 to 1999. In that time, he umpired matches in the following competitions:
- Sydney ("Lower Grades" panel covering 4th & 5th Grade, A- and B- Division Municipalities & Shires, Poidevin-Gray Shield, Frank Gray Cup, and Green Shield - not trading stamps)
- Sydney Womens Competition (1st & 2nd Grade)
- Illawarra ("B" Panel, covering 1st & 2nd Grade

His representative umpiring career saw him reach the pinnacles of:

John also held the post of Honorary Librarian (Electronic Resources) for the South Africa Womens Cricket Team at the 2001 World Cup tournament at Napier, New Zealand. T
John has had training experience with Womens Cricket South Coast, and is presently seeking training accreditation with the New South Wales Cricket Umpires and Scorers Association.
